Translation

The term translation is often used with reference to both oral interpretation and written translation work.

Interpretation

Interpretation involves the reproduction of a real-time spoken or signed source text in a target language text that cannot be corrected due to the limited time available. The interpreting process is influenced by the specific communication situation and the social and cultural backgrounds of the parties involved (cf. Kade 1968:35, 1965:93).

A distinction is made between two forms of interpreting, namely consecutive and simultaneous. In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter renders words, or signs, at the same time as they are articulated by the speaker, or signer. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter waits for the speaker, or signer, to finish a particular sequence of text and then renders their words or signs into the taget language.

Sign interpretation, i.e. interpretation between a spoken language and a signed language or between two signed languages, is mainly performed simultaneously as there is no risk of acoustic interference between the languages involved.

Translation

Translation involves the reproduction of a written source text in a target language text that can be checked and corrected as required. The process does not have to deliver real time results, so speed is not as important as in the case of interpretation, and there is normally ample time for correction of the final product before delivery.

The translation services offered by duooo involve translation of written texts or video recordings in signed language into (another) signed language, such as Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS), as well as translation in form of spoken or written texts in English or German for signed video content. Our translation services also include subtitling for spoken or signed language videos.

Typical applications include videos and other visual content using sign language and/or subtitles for accessible information and barrier-free communication, e.g. websites for public authorities and institutions or companies, apps and guides for galleries and museums etc, and DVDs as well as other storage media in a variety of fields.
